KIND factsheet: Supporting Family Unity for Unaccompanied and Separated Children

Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) works to ensure unaccompanied and separated children can live safely with their families. Whether at the U.S.–Mexico border, across Europe, or in countries of origin, KIND works to prevent family separation, reunite children with relatives, and support their healing after trauma. This holistic approach combines legal representation, trauma-informed psychosocial care, and advocacy to strengthen child protection systems and expand access to reunification pathways. From reuniting Afghan children displaced by conflict to helping Central American minors through the CAM Program, KIND partners with local organizations and governments to remove barriers and safeguard children’s best interests. By upholding family unity, KIND protects children’s rights, promote resilience, and ensure they have the support they need to thrive.
